2024 Movie Reviews

[Jan 03] Perempuan Tanah Jahanam "Impetigore" (2019) ★★★★☆
I haven't watched any Indonesian horror in a while, but now I feel like I need to watch more stuff by Joko Anwar! Tara Basro was great as the lead, but I actually preferred Marissa Anita and Asmara Abigail in their roles better!

[Jan 13] The Invisible Man (2020) ★★★★★
I wasn't expecting to like this movie as much as I did. I don't like Elizabeth Moss, or figure I don't because she's a Scientologist (I literally just now learned that she played Torch in Girl Interrupted!!!). But damn, this movie was good!

[Jan 14] Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) ★★★★☆
I am an Avengers hater, but I've always loved the Guardians movies. No other Avengers movie could emulate the humor and heart that James Gunn puts into his stories. I laughed, I cried, what a damn good movie!

Raw (2016) ★★☆☆☆
I... really didn't like this movie at all. I know that it's supposed to be pretty popular and people compare it to Ginger Snaps, but it wasn't really my thing. I thought it was too many crazy college antics (which was just annoying) and not enough eating people.

Troop Beverly Hills (1989) ★★★☆☆
I heard my boss talking about this movie so I figured I'd check it out. I really did not know that Jenny Lewis (from Rilo Kiley) was a child actor in the 80s! And Carla Gugino was in this too, how cute!!

Great Outdoors (1988) ★★☆☆☆
It's very rare that I finish up a movie and I'm confused by what the plot was even trying to tell me / portray. I suppose this was just a story about some people staying in a cabin in the woods and it's supposed to be funny... But I didn't like it ( ._. )""

[•REC] (2007) ★★★★☆
I haven't watched this movie in years, and I remember really liking it when I watched it (probably not long after it came out). For a zombie movie, it's pretty solid. But what's even more cool is that it's revealed to be more than just a zombie movie later on!

[•REC]² (2009) ★★★☆☆
The sequel wasn't as good as the first one, but it is nice to get some backstory behind the "zombies". The main actor isn't actually Spanish and his accent isn't that great (like I should be speaking about accents when I have a speech impediment when I speak Spanish lol), but still an alright watch!

Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare (2023) ★★★☆☆
This documentary was just okay. My beef with documentaries now a days are that they don't take sides as strongly as they should, and then they don't even reveal a good resolution in the end (which I get those don't always exist in real life, but c'mon). The story with this went nowhere in the end really...

[Feb 17] Bullet Train (2022) ★★★★☆
This turned out to be a better movie than I originally thought it would be. I could care less about Brad Pitt (and the majority of the actors in this movie), but the characters of Lemon and Tangerine were really great!

[Mar 02] Memories of Murder (2003) ★★★★☆
While I prefer more of Bong Joon-ho's dystopian / fantasy stories, this was pretty good too since it was based off a true story. Very sad in many ways - I listen to a lot of Asian True Crime and their police forces are absolute jokes and this movie was kind of the epitome of that (all police forces across the world are a fucking joke, but that's another rant for another day).

[Mar 22] Coherence (2013) ★★★★☆
It was super cool IMO that this movie was made low budget, pretty much with no script, and in the director(? I think)'s living room! With the whole no script thing, it proves that these actors (who aren't superstar Hollywood people) are actually very talented. The plot was really intriguing as well!

[Mar 22] Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) ★★★★☆
As someone who enjoyed the old movie, but didn't really care about it like some fans do, I did enjoy this one. I liked the inclusion of kids and women without being too pushy or political about it. I kinda wish the teenager side-plot was removed though, a lot of the scenes with Finn Wolfhard were just kinda pointless?

[Mar 23] Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) ★★★☆☆
Another enjoyable inclusion into the Ghostbusters series. While I didn't like the whole "let's all fight against Phoebe for no reason" plot (and her ghost friend was a bit cringey), I did like the movie. Always good to see the OG actors, and I liked Kumail's character as well.

Enemy (2013) ★★★★☆
This was certainly a strange movie. I wanted to see it because I like Jake Gyllenhaal, but also Dennis Villeneuve is a pretty good film maker. I liked the metaphor in this, and the "meaning" behind it as well.

Prisoners (2013) ★★★★☆
Also a Dennis Villeneuve movie with Jake Gyllenhaal. This one was really good, despite the fact that the "mystery" was kinda easy to figure out. I enjoyed it though.

Paprika パプリカ (2006) ★★★★☆
I really liked this movie and I can see where Christopher Nolan would have used it as inspiration for Inception. I didn't expect it to go in the direction that it did, and I didn't expect the ending either, but I really liked this one!

Shrek (2001) ★★★★★
Shrek has stood the test of time as a true masterpiece! That's why I have to give it four stars, even if it's not considered a "classic". I just don't think anybody will ever be able to make a movie like this one again...

Unbreakable (2000) ★★★☆☆
I don't feel like 2000 was that long ago (although it WAS now), but damn, the quality of this movie really tells me otherwise. The movie is not bad in the least bit, just a bit slow and somewhat boring. It's a good, unsuspecting introduction to a really odd superhero trilogy though!

Split (2016) ★★★★☆
I don't know why it took M. Night 16 years to continue his movie, but I remember learning about this film and had NO idea it was a sequel, or a superhero film. Anyways, is it weird for me to say James McAvoy is hot in this?

Glass (2019) ★★★★☆
This is a great ending to a very niche trilogy! I'm so glad they got the old actors back, and I'm sad that this was the last (or one of the last) movies for Bruce Willis before his dementia set in. I really liked this!

Bridesmaids (2011) ★★★☆☆
I pitched this as "Hangover for women" to my husband. Not that he really needed convincing to watch it, and not like he likes Hangover that much, but it was at least to show him that for a "stupid" movie, it was still funny. I love Melissa McCarthy in this one!

Despicable Me (2010) ★★★★☆
Alright, so I can't believe this movie came out that long ago! I was in college back then... Did I watch this in theatres when I was in college? Whatever, it's a cute movie!

Despicable Me 2 (2013) ★★★☆☆
Oh, so conveniently we saw Bridesmaids not long before this, and Kristen Wiig plays Gru's girlfriend! This one is cute too.

Despicable Me 3 (2017) ★★★★☆
This one is the best SIMPLY because Trey Parker plays the villain... I love randomly hearing him or Matt in a movie (kinda like when either Tim Heidecker or Eric Wareheim show up in crap randomly too). Anyways, I also liked Gru's brother.

[April 28] Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) ★★★★☆
I think a lot of people hated this movie, just like they hated the alien one... but Indiana Jones was always ridiculous and stupid to me. So aliens, time travel... Who cares, it was fun and Mads Mikkelsen was there, so I'm in!

[April 30] Mother 마더 (2009) ★★★☆☆
I love Bong Joon-Ho and I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie. I only rated it lower than a 4 because again, I reiterate, I listen to a lot of Asian true crime and I know men get away from abusing / raping / killing women SO EASILY, so I'm not sure what type of story this is trying to tell...? It made me a little uncomfy.

[May 01] X-Men (2000) ★★★★☆
God, watching these movies makes me feel old. I remember all of this from when I was a kid, and it weirds me out knowing most of the cast (who are all old now) were younger than I am now when this was filmed. AAAAA!

[May 05] X2 (2003) ★★☆☆☆
I literally couldn't tell you anything that happened in this movie other than the part about that one person dying towards the end.

[May 07] X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) ★★★☆☆
I remember being excited when I saw Omahyra Mota in the background (playing Arclight), because she was my favorite model at one point in time. The fact that so many people die in this movie really sucks, but it was funny that my husband discovered on this day that Kelsey Grammar is the actor playing Beast. He was so shocked!

[May 10] Kiss The Girls (1997) ★★★☆☆
Funny, I already watched this last year, but there's a lot about it I didn't remember (although I definitely remember who the killer is!) I forgot that Tarzan's voice actor, Tony Goldwyn, was in this.

[May 18] The Strangers (2008) ★★☆☆☆
The movie itself is kinda fun, because it's scary to watch a house be broken into, but holy shit, the characters were so dumb! I remember watching this when it first came out and I was in high school. I did not like it back then at all.

[May 18] The Strangers: Prey At Night (2018) ★★★☆☆
While this one wasn't all that fantastic either, I did prefer it to the first one. Bailee Madison looks JUST like my sister, and while she's not a very good actress, I liked that she at least got to be a little bad ass in this.

[May 18] Abigail (2024) ★★★★★
Oh MAN what a fun movie! I love Kevin Durand, Giancarlo Esposito, and Dan Stevens! Also, kinda funny that both of Mary's husbands from Downton Abbey were in this (Dan Stevens - Matthew and Matthew Goode - Henry), that's just a, uh, fun fact? The littl girl was a great actress too!

X-Men: First Class (2011) ★★★★☆
Oh man, I remember having so much fun watching this movie for the first time. I was in college back when it came out, and I believe I watched it with my sister? Anyways, I was in love with Michael Fassbender, and my sister thought "James Smack-mah-boy" was cute.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) ★★★★☆
I don't actually know how popular this one is, but I forgot how much I liked it?! Like, the whole time travel concept was really fun, I liked Wolverine going around dealing with people in the past, and the mix of the older actors from the original movies and the younger actors from the reboot was super cool too!

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) ★★★☆☆
Okay, this movie I didn't like so much... Oscar Isaac's character, who I guess is Apocalypse(??) looked so awful and was basically useless. I just didn't enjoy this one.

Dark Phoenix (2019) ★★☆☆☆
What the fuck y'all! This followed a very similar pattern of what really sucked about The Last Stand (aka killing off main characters for no apparent reason). I actually CAN see why people didn't like this one.

[May 31] Deadpool (2016) ★★☆☆☆
This was just... alright I suppose. I mean, I know that Deadpool is the quirky ~*oh BOY I'm sO rAnDoM*~ character for Marvel, and I shouldn't expect more from Ryan Reynolds (sorry Ryan) but again, this was just alright.

[June 01] Deadpool 2 (2018) ★★★☆☆
Okay, I did like this one better, mostly because of its inclusion of other famous actors. The plot still isn't fantastic, but I had more fun watching it than the last one. Also... time travel! Apparently I really like that as a theme in X-Men movies.

Tarot (2024) ★★☆☆☆
This movie was painfully pointless. I didn't feel a connection to any of the characters, and the story behind the tarot cards would have made a better film. The creatures were pretty cool though (like the ghosts from 13 Ghosts), I would have liked to have seen more of those!

[June 27] Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) ★★★★☆
I actually had fun with this one! Although the one that came out a few years ago was good too. I don't know if this one was popular or not, but I really enjoyed it.

McMillion$ (2010) ★★★★☆
Well, this was a pretty wild story! It's a documentary about how a group of people frauded the McDonald's Monopoly game that was big when I was a kid. I had no idea this even happened, so it was cool to watch. Although annoying that the FBI wastes time and money investigating this instead of actually important things...

[July 13] Eileen (2023) ★★★★☆
I'm giving this a pretty good review because it stayed pretty loyal to how the book was! Although Eileen was far less creepy and gross in the movie than she is in the book. Either way, the soundtrack was good and it wasn't a bad watch!

Stopmotion (2023) ★★★★☆
Very good! My husband and I were talking about stop motion so I brought up that we should watch this film. It is ultra creepy and the stop motion was so awesome. I predicted the "twist", but that didn't make it any less enjoyable.

Sleepaway Camp (1983) ★★★★☆
I actually really liked this movie, which surprises me. I had never seen it before, but knew it was a cult classic and I usually hate old slasher films. This one was really wild though, even though I guessed the plot twist!

Watchers (2024) ★★★★☆
I could see a lot of people not liking this movie considering the subject matter (let's just say it turns very... theologically fantastic?) But I really thought it was neat! I loved the creature designs and thought it was a nice film.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) ★★☆☆☆
Now, this movie was all over the goddamn place. I did really like the previous ones, and would normally be super excited for a Godzilla movie (I love the nuke dragon!) but this was just... chaotic and not in a good way.

The Garfield Movie (2024) ★★☆☆☆
I... just didn't care for this movie in the least bit. I didn't find it particularly interesting and it didn't pull on my heart-strings the way most animated films about cats do. I just didn't care for it.

Silence of the Lambs (1991) ★★★★☆
I don't know how I'd never seen this movie, but it was good that I finally got to watch it! It was really good and funny seeing Ted Levine so young. He woulda been kinda hot if it wasn't for that horribly unfortunate hairline of his...

[Aug 03] Maxxxine (2024) ★★★★☆
YESS!!! I'd been waiting so long to watch this movie!! It had so many callbacks to classic films, which is funny, because I watched Psycho right after this and realized that there are a lot of callbacks to that movie in particular. Anyways, so much fun. I loved it!

[Aug 03] Psycho (1960) ★★★☆☆
I used to really love black and white movies when I was younger, and I told my husband there are so many black and white horror films we need to see. We started with this one and it was alright. The first maybe 40 minutes of the movie were what I thought the whole film would be about? The last extrapolation on who Norman Bates is was... a little unnecessary in my opinion.

[Aug 10] Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) ★★★★☆
Alright, so I've watched the third Deadpool movie now and I liked this one eve more than the second one! It had some cool cameos (very unexpected ones in my opinion) and the storyline was fun and sweet.

[Aug 10] Spawn (1997) ★★☆☆☆
Hot diggity dog, I used to love this movie as a kid so I made my husband watch it with me and uh... It wasn't as good as I remember it being, but it was still campy fun. I do like Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo and I would actually REALLY like to see a reboot of this.

Last Shift (2014) ★★★☆☆
I really didn't like this movie at all... What's funny is that it's from 2014 and it already got a remake in 2023, which I heard was even worse than this one!

Absentia (2011) ★★★★☆
I'm up for anything made by Mike Flanagan. It's funny to know that this was his pre-Kate Siegel days, because one of the main actress in this is his ex-wife. This was intriguing and spooky!

The Gate (1981) ★★★☆☆
I don't know what got us watching this movie, but it was a fun, culty, 80s flick! Goofy, kinda gross, and enjoyable!

Ghost Rider (2007) ★★☆☆☆
Uhhhhhh. This sure was something. I like Nic Cage, but I don't think I care about this movie at all.

Lost River (2014) ★★★★☆
Since Barbie, I have become more intrigued by Ryan Gosling. He's an interesting dude, and he made this movie. It was certainly... odd, but I don't really know how I feel about it. I don't normally like Matt Smith, but I liked seeing him as a villain.

The Deep House (2021) ★★★★☆
For some reason, most people really did not like this movie, and I'm not sure why. Water scares the hell outta me, so I thought it was super spooky! Fun fact: the main male actor is Mick Jagger's son.

Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021) ★★★★☆
A fun documentary on folk horror, although a bit disappointing that it focuses a lot on British films. There are sections of other cultures and such, but the main focus was Brittain. Either way, still an informative watch!

Prometheus (2012) ★★★★★
I love this movie so much. I know some fans of the first Aliens (mostly people who only watched that one) hated this, but I love the religion / mythology of it. And David 8 ♥

Alien: Covenant (2017) ★★★★★
Also love!! There was so much about this movie that I did not remember from the first time watching it. I prefer the first, but I do like seeing the location they end up in. And the ending *chef's kiss*!

Alien: Romulus (2024) ★★★★★
HELL YES! I did not want to get my expectations up for this movie, because I'm a huge fan of Aliens, but this blew me away. I LOVED the inclusion of some Prometheus/Covenant stuff in there too. So good!

Feardotcom (2002) ★★★☆☆
Stephen Dorff stars in this movie, which is funny because we just saw him as a kid in "The Gate". My husband noticed that first. I don't know if this movie was trying to be a "13 Ghosts", but it just didn't do it for me...

[Sept 14] Trap (2024) ★★★★☆
While I feel like this was kind of a big commercial for M. Night's daughter, Saleka, who wrote and performed music for the movie and acted in it... It was a fun watch! So sad seeing your teen heartthrobs play parents of teenagers. Nothing makes you feel older!

[Sept 14] Longlegs (2024) ★★★★☆
I have no idea what was happening during parts of this movie. It was good though! Spooky and the cinematography was really good!

[Sept 14] Oddity (2024) ★★★☆☆
I'm not sure how I felt about this movie. I honestly thought I was going to like it more than I did, but it was creepy. Predictable though. But goddamn, I really want to live in that house featured in the film!!

The Deliverance (2024) ★☆☆☆☆
This movie was soooo hokey. The one saving grace to the entire thing was Glen Close's acting. But seriously, not worth watching.

I Saw The TV Glow (2024) ★★★★☆
I had originally rated this 3 stars, but went back to 4. It really stuck with me. I get the actual meaning (about becoming who you're meant to be through a trans perspective) but since I'm not trans, I see it through a different lense. Very thought provoking, and the cinematography is fantastic!

Speak no Evil (2024) ★★★★☆
I haven't even seen the original, but I love James McAvoy in horror, so we watched this version first. I gotta say... I really liked it! I just don't like the ending.

Haunt Season (2024) ★★★★☆
A pretty awesome movie for such an amateur production. I liked how nobody in this movie is an A-list (or probably even B-list) actor. Gritty and scary!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) ★★★★☆
Alright, alright, I admit, this is a fun movie! I was not into the multiple story-lines thing though. They coulda cut out Monica Belucci's story and EVEN Lydia's boyfriend and it would have been better and more cohesive.

Woman of the Hour (2024) ★★★☆☆
This was... Okay. They took some liberties on what really happened, and the fact that they made this random Dating Show woman the main character was odd. She had one interaction with the dude in real life, so I kinda find it lame they didn't focus on a victim instead.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) ★★★★★
One of my favorite movies of all time! The costumes are beautiful (another Eiko Ishioka masterpiece) and so are all the actors!

The Substance (2024) ★★★★★
What a WILD RIDE! I loved every second of it. More movies need to be like this one. Wow!

V/H/S/Beyond (2024) ★★★★☆
I generally like all the V/H/S movies, but this one was really good! All sci-fi / alien based, and for the most part I can't think of one of the stories that I disliked.

It's What's Inside (2024) ★★★★☆
This was a fun movie. Kinda reminded me of "Bodies Bodies Bodies" (and honestly they could have switched titles and it would've worked for both of them). It's good to see people getting what they deserve in the end!

Caddo Lake (2024) ★★★★☆
Definitely heavily inspired by "Dark" (my favorite TV show of all time), so I was really invested in this one. It was very well-done!

Jim Henson's Turkey Hollow (2015) ★★★☆☆
This was... fun? Very odd and goofy, but I mean, it is a Jim Henson company movie, so I can't expect anymore than that. It was cute though.

Tower Heist (2011) ★★★★☆
I generally like Ben Stiller in almost anything he's ever been in. I'd never even heard of this movie before this year, but it turned out to be really good!

The Longest Yard (2005) ★★★★☆
Surprisingly, considering how much I dislike Adam Sandler, I love this movie and have ever since I saw it when I was younger. I made my husband watch it (and he's a big time Sandler-hater) and even he had to admit that it's good!

Thanksgiving (2023) ★★★★☆
I don't really get the hate for this movie. I thought it was a pretty fun slasher fic *shrug* and I was happy that it was themed around Thanksgiving, becuase I feel like there aren't enough horror movies based on that holiday.

Home Alone 3 (1997) ★★★★☆
I also don't get the hate for this movie. I think people don't like it because it's the first Home Alone withouth Macaulay Culkin, so they judge it pretty harshly. But I owned this VHS when I was younger and I've always liked it.

Chernobyl Diaries (2012) ★★☆☆☆
I've seen this before, but obviously wasn't invested enough to remember what happens. It's... okay. Something to put on in the background I guess, but not very entertaining.

Ghoul (2015) ★★★★☆
Now this one was fun! Stressful and spooky, and also kinda stupid because I actually laughed out loud when I realized who these people were being "haunted" by.

Frankenstein's Army (2013) ★★★★☆
This was a wild and crazy experience and I was living for it! Super crazy and fun and I loved the wild creations that Dr. Frankenstein put together.

Cuckoo (2024) ★★★☆☆
I was not sure at all where this movie was going through a majority of it, of course, until it's spelled out for me by Dan Stevens. The soundtrack was great and the cinematography was nice, but it was just not for me, really.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) ★★★★☆
A Christmas classic! I love Jim Carrey's rendition of The Grinch more than I like the original cartoon.

Home Alone (1990) ★★★★★
I'm not sure if this movie or The Santa Clause is my favorite Christmas movie of all time, but whatever. I love it!

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) ★★★☆☆
This Home Alone... I actually don't like as much as number 1 or even 3! I know it's funny, but it's literally just the same thing as the first one, but set in NYC instead.

Elf (2003) ★★★★☆
I haven't seen this movie in years, and honestly, re-watching it this year I've realized I actually like it a lot more than I used to. Maybe it's because I'm an adult and I can appreciate Will Ferrel in it more? I'm not sure!

Prep & Landing (2009) ★★★☆☆
This was... cute? Oat put it on thinking it would be a longer movie, but in reality it was like 30 minutes (maybe even less). It was something to watch.

Olive the Other Reindeer ★★★★★
This short movie though, I remember watching when I was younger, and now that I'm older and realized Matt Groening worked on it, made me really like it!

The Santa Clause (1994) ★★★★★
Again, not sure if this is my favorite Christmas movie, or if it's Home Alone. I just love this one!

The Santa Clause 2 (2002) ★★★☆☆
Another situation where I like 1 and 3 more than 2... I'm just not into the plot of this one, and I really don't like that the actress who plays his ex-wife got rid of her cute 90's bob hairstyle.

The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006) ★★★★☆
Funny enough, the last time I watched this was in theatres. It was my little sister's first movie in a theatre, and I was a teenager, so I hated it at the time. Now, re-watching it as an adult, I really thought it was cute!

Jingle All the Way (1996) ★★★★★
ALSO one of my favorite Christmas movies. This one would have to take 2nd to the tie of Home Alone and The Santa Clause. It's just too much fun!

I'll Be Home for Christmas (1998) ★★☆☆☆
I only gave this one such a low rating, becuase I think Jonathan Taylor Thomas is a little ass-wipe in this movie, and I can't believe we're supposed to be rooting for him the entire movie?

The Exorcism (2024) ★★☆☆☆
This movie... Kinda sucked. I would have preferred to watch "The Pope's Exorcism" again. Ty Simpkon's sister Ryan is in this and it's funny because she looks JUST like her brother.

Blink Twice (2024) ★★★★☆
Now THIS was a surprise! I mean, I hate when celebrities write stories and act like they care (I'm sure Zoe Kravitz, being a rich celebrity herself, does not actually give a shit about anyone that has been raped / tortured by the cabal of Hollywood demons) but it was STILL a good movie.

Host (2020) ★★★★☆
I made my mom and sister watch this since I thought the storyline was clever and it was well-made for being something shot through Zoom and phone cameras (also with nobody-level actors that were really good!). It actually scared my mom!

Grave Encounters (2011) ★★★☆☆
This was, oddly enough, not as fun to watch this time around. I've seen it before, and it scared me the first time I watched it, but this time it was just meh.

The Dressmaker (2015) ★★★★★
I'm pretty sure I just randomly heard about this movie thanks to a Pinterest image I saw of it. I love Kate Winslett, so I was like "yeah, whatever, let's watch it" and I was BLOWN AWAY. Did not expect this random Australian indie film to become something that I would now claim to love! But here we are!
